Finding Abe

21st-Century Abe was active February 12, 2009-August 31, 2009.

To mark Lincoln’s 200th birthday we explored why we in the 21st century are still obsessed with this 19th-century man. Abe is everywhere, from advertising to political punditry. What does this popular Abe have to do with the historical Abe? 21st-Century Abe took six months to tackle these questions. We asked scholars and artists to get the ball rolling, but visitor responses have defined 21st-Century Abe.

Blog

The 21st-Century Abe blog is the place to find out what’s been happening on 21stcenturyabe.org and what fun, exciting or downright ridiculous things the curatorial team have discovered in their search for Lincoln.

The blog is no longer being updated. But please check out our older posts.

Lincoln 200 is this Weekend

By: Kathy Haas
June 30, 2009

Philadelphia always throws a bang-up party for the 4th of July, but this year there’s an added bonus–a huge Lincoln celebration will be taking place near the Independence Visitor Center from July 2-5, under the very shadow of Independence Hall. Lincoln 200 will feature a Lincoln exhibition, living history, Lincoln activites for kids, booths on Lincoln in the arts, and more.

The event was inspired by the Great Central Fair of 1864, the site of Abraham Lincoln’s final visit to Pennsylvania while he was alive. It was at this fair that Lincoln’s manuscript of the Baltimore Address was sold off to raise money for the troops.

We’ve been talking to the Lincoln 200 folks since last fall and 21st-Century Abe will be represented in several places at the festival. There will be a looping video in the Arts tent featuring the artists projects and contest winners from the site. Also, 1812’s project “Lincoln Behind the Speeches” will be screened in the film tent. Finally, the winning poster designs will also be on display. So come check us out and enjoy all of the great activities. I’m off work on Friday and Saturday for the holiday, but I am hoping to check it out on Friday with my kids, so I’ll be sure to let you know if I do.
