The polka is a 19th-century dance, so this isn’t as strange as it might seem. But, Lincoln wasn’t much a dancer–the story goes that when he first met Mary Todd he went up to her and said, “I want to dance with you in the worst way.” And she said afterwards, “That’s what he did.”
