The good Shepard giveth his life for the sheep
This image is quintessential 21st Century Abe to me for a few reasons. First off, it evokes the parallels between Abe and Obama, suggesting how Lincoln might have been portrayed in a contemporary election. It also reflects on the heroic status brought out through Shepard Fairey’s iconic treatment and the powerful impact that art can have on the national consciousness. Finally, through my title I am eluding to the very 21st Century lawsuit filed by the AP against Shepard Fairey for purportedly illegally adapting an image of Obama without the appropriate rights and permissions. I am not attempting to lower the tragic death of one of our nation’s greatest leaders by associating it with a contemporary copyright legal battle, I am simply suggesting that no good deed goes unpunished, particularly in the case of great sacrifice.
