Abraham Lincoln came to public notice at a time when being from a “good family” was considered an important asset, just as being from an undistinguished or disreputable family could be a serious liability. In this letter Lincoln outlines what little he knows of his family history, attributing the meagerness of his knowledge to his father being orphaned at the age of six.

I think its’s poignant how little Lincoln knows about his family. He knew much less than we do today–here’s a cool article from the Boston Globe about people who want to trace their lineage back to Lincoln and end up in Hingham
