As a young man, Lincoln was a zealous politician, who, in the manner of the time, was capable of a certain amount of dissembling and dirty tricks, and who attacked his party’s opponents with every available weapon. In the document at hand, Lincoln is attempting to get proof that Martin Van Buren, the Democratic candidate for President in 1840, had favored limited voting rights for black citizens, something that would be almost universally disapproved in Illinois.
