The small mining town of Potosi, Missouri, where this crudely (and probably hurriedly) printed broadside was issued, was hardly a population center, but it was an unabashed outpost of Southern sympathizers. At first glance, this broadside appears designed to give notice that something momentous has happened, but it proves rather to be a set of assertions that lead very pointedly to a single conclusion. What the President had done was to inaugurate “and UNHOLY and UNJUST WAR.”
