Nemonico, a mentalist and magician for Tijuana, agreed to meet us at the Lincoln statue near the center of Tijuana, to wow us with his abilities, discuss his relationship with Lincoln and tell us stories of the narcotrafficantes who frequent the bar located directly behind the Lincoln statue.
This is part of a longer piece we are working on, exploring the connections - both real and legendary - between Abraham Lincoln and Benito Juarez. Both men have been memorialized through statues exchanged between the U.S. and Mexico during the last 50 years. Here, we’ve filmed the Lincoln monument in Tijuana, Baja California, as well as performance artist and mentalist Gerardo Navarro, known as Nemonico, reading part of Lincoln’s 1864 address to the “Sanitary Fair” in Baltimore, MD.
