Introduction

In a sense, the country has never entirely recovered from Lincoln’s assassination. It is still the best known and most written about single event in our history and remains something of a national obsession. All of this is necessary background to understanding the Ford’s Theatre playbill, which turns out to be an elaborate forgery.
