Introduction

To get a concrete sense of the prevailing public sentiment at the news of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, there is no substitute for reading the Northern newspapers. Perhaps the most appropriate adjectives for the initial response would be “stunned” and “appalled.” Once the response became evident, it amounted to a collective feeling that combined shock, disbelief, and outrage.
