Jefferson Davis was in many ways the opposite of Lincoln in temperament and demeanor. Classically educated and aristocratic, he was perceived as somewhat stiff and formal, lacking in warmth and humor. Given his situation after the fall of Richmond, it is not surprising that his first concern should be how Lincoln’s assassination will affect the war and the Confederacy.
